Description
48V Battery Unlock and Balancing Service
VW RETROFIT provides a professional 48V battery unlock and battery balancing service for selected mild-hybrid vehicles from multiple manufacturers.
The 48V battery and Battery Management System are supplied as one integrated assembly. Depending on the manufacturer and battery design, the internal BMS may lock or place the battery into protection mode when it detects low voltage, excessive cell imbalance, interrupted communication or another condition outside its permitted operating range.
Our service is intended for compatible batteries that require specialist assessment, controlled balancing and electronic unlocking.
Prices start from £150 plus VAT. The final price depends on the vehicle manufacturer, battery type, part number, internal condition and work required. We will confirm the price before starting the service.
When Is a 48V Battery Unlock Required?
A locked or imbalanced 48V battery may cause symptoms including:
• 48V electrical system malfunction warning
• Mild-hybrid system unavailable
• 48V battery not charging
• Start/stop system unavailable
• Low battery state of charge
• Incorrect battery state-of-charge reading
• Battery protection mode
• Communication fault with the 48V battery
• Internal Battery Management System fault
• Excessive difference between cell-group voltages
• Vehicle power-management problems
• Fault codes returning immediately after being cleared
• Battery remaining inactive after charging or vehicle repair
These symptoms do not automatically confirm that the battery is locked. Similar warnings may be caused by the starter generator, DC/DC converter, wiring, power supply, communication network or another vehicle component.
Correct diagnostic information is required before the battery is delivered.
What Is a 48V Battery Unlock Service?
Depending on the battery type and condition, our service may include:
• Identification of the complete 48V battery assembly
• Inspection of the battery casing and connectors
• Battery voltage assessment
• Individual cell-group voltage assessment where supported
• Battery imbalance assessment
• Controlled battery balancing
• BMS communication testing
• Assessment of the battery protection or locked state
• Electronic unlocking of a compatible integrated BMS
• Clearing recoverable battery-related stored states
• Post-service communication testing
• Final voltage and balance verification
The exact procedure depends on the manufacturer, battery design, part number and condition.
Battery Balancing
Cell groups inside a 48V battery should operate within an acceptable voltage range. If the difference between cell groups becomes excessive, the integrated BMS may restrict battery operation or place the battery into protection mode.
Where the battery condition allows, we carry out controlled balancing to reduce the voltage difference between the cell groups.
Battery balancing is not the same as replacing damaged cells. Batteries containing defective, internally damaged or unsafe cells may not be suitable for this service.
Integrated Battery Management System
In these applications, the 48V battery and BMS form one complete assembly. The customer must therefore supply the complete battery, not a separate external BMS module.
The BMS monitors functions such as:
• Battery voltage
• Individual cell-group voltages
• Battery temperature
• Charging and discharging conditions
• Internal protection status
• Communication with the vehicle
• Permitted battery operation
The exact monitoring and protection functions vary between manufacturers and battery versions.
48V Battery Unlock Compatibility
This service may be suitable for selected 48V mild-hybrid batteries fitted to:
• Audi
• BMW
• Mercedes-Benz
• Jaguar
• Land Rover
• Range Rover
• McLaren
• Volkswagen Group vehicles
• Other compatible 48V mild-hybrid vehicles
Compatibility cannot be confirmed using the vehicle make or model alone.
Manufacturers use different battery designs, internal electronics, software versions and part numbers. Even vehicles of the same model and production year may use different battery variants.
Please contact us with the VIN, complete battery part number, diagnostic fault codes and clear photographs of the battery label before ordering.

How Our 48V Battery Unlock Service Works
1. Contact us before ordering
Send us the vehicle VIN, make, model, production year, diagnostic fault codes and clear photographs of the battery and identification label.
2. Compatibility assessment
We will review the supplied information and confirm whether the battery may be suitable for our 48V battery unlock service.
3. Price confirmation
Prices start from £150 plus VAT. We will confirm the expected price based on the battery type and information supplied.
4. Battery removal
The customer is responsible for arranging safe removal of the complete 48V battery from the vehicle.
5. Battery delivery
The customer must deliver the complete battery to our workshop. Please do not send or deliver the battery without prior confirmation.
6. Assessment and balancing
We assess the battery condition, cell-group voltages and integrated BMS status. Battery balancing is carried out where required and technically possible.
7. Battery unlock
Where the battery is compatible and in suitable condition, we carry out the required electronic unlocking procedure.
8. Final testing
The battery voltage, balance and communication are checked before collection.
Delivering the Battery
The customer is responsible for delivering and collecting the complete battery.
Lithium batteries are subject to transport and carrier restrictions. Do not send a 48V lithium battery through an ordinary parcel service without confirming that the carrier accepts this type of battery and that all applicable packaging and transport requirements have been met.
Please contact us before arranging delivery.
When delivering the battery, provide:
• Customer name
• Contact telephone number
• Vehicle VIN
• Vehicle make and model
• Production year
• Battery part number
• Diagnostic fault codes
• Description of the symptoms
• Details of any previous charging, balancing or repair attempts
Turnaround Time
The standard turnaround is normally the same or next working day after the battery has been delivered and accepted for the service.
The turnaround time may be longer if:
• The battery requires extended balancing
• The battery condition requires additional assessment
• Communication with the integrated BMS is not available
• The battery type requires a different procedure
• The supplied information is incomplete
• The battery is unsuitable or unsafe to process
We will advise you if additional time is required.
After the Battery Is Reinstalled
After installation, the vehicle should receive a complete diagnostic scan.
Any remaining faults relating to the starter generator, DC/DC converter, wiring, communication network, power supply or another component must be diagnosed separately.
Some vehicles may require coding, adaptations, commissioning or manufacturer-specific procedures after battery installation. These services are not included unless agreed separately.
A successful battery unlock does not guarantee that every 48V system warning will disappear if another fault remains in the vehicle.
